James Franco switchblade

Do you want to buy a Brad Renfro Forever knife from James Franco? Of course you do! The Thing quarterly (which is a magazine that costs $US75 per issue) will sell you one for just $US550.

We do not quite understand the Brad Renfro connection, or who thought it would be a good idea to let medical marijuana side effect victim James Franco play with knives, but come on, dog! Franco!

It will feature a custom made switchblade by LATAMA legendary Italian cutlery and Walt Halucha. When fully opened, the knife measures 11 inches. It has a Swivel Bolster and Black & White Brazilian Horn Handle. The blades will each be numbered at the factory in Italy and then laser etched and hand painted by Moon Editions here in SF.

Renfro died of a heroin overdose in 2008; he was 25. As part of the performance aspect to the piece, Franco had "BRAD" carved into his right arm with an Italian switchblade by tattoo-legend Mark Mahoney. The letters are embossed, creating a red wound, and the process took about 20 minutes from start to finish. Through this act, Franco becomes a physical representation of THE THING. In addition to this, Franco carefully drew "Brad Forever" in red lipstick on each of the 6 x 8 1/2 inch table mirrors included in the first run of the issue. The text sits above a small photo of a wild-haired Renfro, who is shirtless and gazing into the distance, forever young.

That makes the switchblade a separate "magazine" so to speak, though one which must be bought separately for a higher price. Renfro was a child actor and long time junky. Franco, also an actor, is apparently his longtime friend. It makes some sense to make the things as a funeral remembrance item or something, though selling them to the public is IMHO so far beyond tacky as to beggar imagination.
