SINGAPORE : Candidates aspiring to contest the forthcoming Presidential Election can expect the Writ of Election to be issued anytime from August 3.

Firstly, to remove from any Register of Electors the name of any person where the Registration Officer believes that the address of that person as shown in the register has ceased to exist.

Secondly, to transfer the name of any person to the appropriate Register of Electors where the person has notified the Commissioner of National Registration in writing of his change of address or contact address.

Potential candidates have up till three days after the writ is issued to submit their applications for the Certificate of Eligibility.

They are former deputy prime minister Dr Tony Tan, former Member of Parliament Dr Tan Cheng Bock, ex-CEO of NTUC Income Mr Tan Kin Lian, a former civil servant Mr Tan Jee Say and Mr Andrew Kuan who was unsuccessful in his bid to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to contest the presidential polls in 2005.

Two of them, Dr Tony Tan and Mr Tan Kin Lian, have submitted their forms to the Presidential Elections Committee to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility.

Analysts said that a fight for the presidency will be critical, because as the results of the recent General Election show, citizens would expect a contest.
