Guest list: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, Analeigh Tipton, Jonah Bobo, directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Jonah Hill, Natalie Morales and Stephen Baldwin joined the movie's stars on the carpet.
Behind the film: Carell plays Cal Weaver, a straitlaced fortysomething whose wife and high school sweetheart, Emily (Moore), suddenly demands a divorce. Cal meets Jacob, a smooth operator whose mission is to get Cal into the dating game. "Honestly, this is a very moving story, it's much more than a romantic comedy," Carell said. Moore called it "a dramedy: It's about the centrality of love in our lives."
Hot date: Carell walked the red carpet with wife Nancy and revealed it was her birthday. Not a bad setting for a party. "It's all really for her," the funnyman joked among the cameras. He planned to fete her at the afterparty at Tao.
Steve Carell arrives at the Ziegfeld Theatre with his wife, Nancy. They were celebrating both the premiere and her birthday.Much about makeovers: In the film, Carell goes from a schlumpy divorcé with a Velcro wallet and a Supercuts 'do to a suave pickup artist with Italian leather shoes and perfectly cut suits. So how stylish is the former Office boss? "I think even jeans and a T-shirt can be dapper. At least the way I wear it," Carell joked.
Man crush: The project reunited Carell and Gosling, who says he wanted to work with Carell since he started in showbiz. They worked together a Hollywood lifetime ago, and Gosling recalls Carell cracking him up even then. "I do remember working with him," Carell said. "He was in a pilot we did for Fox that never went to air. He was just a kid at the time."
Getting physical: Talk about role reversal — Gosling gets to slap Carell around in the film. "He really loves getting slapped," Gosling joked. Carell did not dispute the statement: "There's no greater thrill than to be slapped around by Ryan Gosling."
Déjà vu? Stone, who plays Gosling's straight-shooting, hard-to-woo love interest, has had a whirlwind week. On Monday, the star walked the same New York red carpet for her other summer comedy, Friends With Benefits. "It's so weird. It's the exact same red carpet but different posters."
Carell's skills: Moore, who brought 13-year-old son Caleb Freundlich to the screening, was serious when she talked about her co-star. "We had a great time together, we really did," she said. "He's such a wonderful actor and human being. He's so humble about himself and his abilities, which are incredible."
Analeigh Tipton dazzles on the red carpet. In the film, she plays the babysitter for unhappy couple Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily (Julianne Moore).Finding the "one": Finding true love in Hollywood isn't easy, but Carell said he's fortunate in the love department. "I think it is just luck, because you don't necessarily know. People are always changing and growing. I just got lucky. I met the right person."
The perfect wingman: With Gosling as Carell's dating aficionado in the movie, we asked stars to describe their perfect wingman for a night out. That person would "always elevate the person you're with," Hill said. "Just talk them up. Compliment him like it's going out of style." Stone's perfect wingman? "Someone that does not intervene with what's happening and gets it intuitively."
Support network: Hill was in the house to cheer on his former Superbad co-star Stone. "We text a lot," he said. "I met her when she was like 17. I'm really proud of her." Tipton, who plays a babysitter in Crazy, also had praise for castmate Stone. "I learned a lot from her," the actress said. "She's very much her own person."
Speaking of dapper: Hill is feeling the love — even from strangers — after his recent weight loss. "I was actually walking around today and some super macho guy was like, 'Hey, Jonah, you look great!' And I was like, 'Thanks!'"
Fashion notes: Moore wore a Stella McCartney dress, and Tomei was in Vivienne Westwood. Sone walked the carpet wearing a black lace dress by Tom Ford. "It feels so tight, but I really love it," she said.
Next up: Carell has a big year ahead. "I'm finishing a movie (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) with Keira Knightley, and then I'm going to do a movie (Great Hope Springs) with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. It will be fun."
