Rumors of Steve Perry reuniting with Journey

Rumors of Steve Perry reuniting with Journey are about as common these days as Tiger Blood jokes on the Internet. But now there’s news that former Journey bass player Randy Jackson might be in the mix.

At a recent TV conference, Jackson (sepaking as a judge for Fox’s American Idol) was asked by a fan if he’d ever consider hitting the road again with Journey. Surprisingly, Jackson replied that he still sees Steve Perry every few weeks and during the most recent visit, he told Steve: “If you do it, I’ll do it.” Jackson played on Journey’s 1986 album Raised on Radio.

That’s a tricky time during Journey’s past. It was the album for which longtime bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were fired, opening the door for Jackson. Valory would later return to the lineup and continues to play for them (and handle a lot of the press duties) today, so I can’t see him stepping aside for Jackson’s return. Likewise, the band seems happy to have Arnel Pineda handle the singing duties today.

If the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which would open the door to all previous members to reunite for the induction ceremony (LIKELY BUT WHEN?)

If the band were offered an unreal amount of money by a promoter to do a half-dozen gigs with the original lineup, Steve Smith included (DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH)
