But Sunday a 16-year-old girl defied the odds, despite an apparent suicide attempt from the bridge, according to MSNBC. The first call to fire dispatchers arrived at 10:53 a.m. PST, and rescuers were on the scene 20 minutes later.
It was not clear early on if the girl jumped on purpose or somehow fell from the mid-span section of the bridge moments before, but by Sunday evening Golden Gate Bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie said she could confirm the teenager had jumped in a suicide attempt.
When the coast guard arrived they found a good samaritan who had been keeping her afloat. According to MSNBC she immediately transfered to Marin General Hospital, though her condition remains unknown.
The incident follows a March jump, in which a 17-year-old boy survived a similar attempt from the bridge. However, that jump was not a suicide attempt, as boy claimed it was a "stunt."
