Today Augusta and North Augusta are linked by the busy 13th Street Bridge. But it wasn't always so.Local histories say that James Jackson, North Augusta's founder, constructed the first bridge connecting the region's oldest town with it's South Carolina neighbor. Streetcars would cross the bridge from Augusta to homes and resorts in North Augusta.
More than a century ago, the predecessor of today's bridge didn't carry thousands of cars each day, but it did feature a trolley that hustled passengers from Augusta to homes and resort spots in North Augusta and back.
Local histories credit the trolley idea to James Jackson, North Augusta's founder. He purchased 5,600 acres across the river in 1890 and soon constructed a bridge across the river at 13th Street. The trolley line was built in 1897 and a few years later an interurban road -- one of the South's first -- connected hotels in the growing resort communities of both states.
