Just like Frosty, the lovable character from the Christmas tale, Snowman Joe comes back every year.
And this year is no different. Snowman Joe was at the Dollard des Ormeaux Civic Centre on Nov. 5 to raise awareness and funds to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Snowman Joe made his first appearance in the West Island in November 2000, only a few days after Louise Boucher's father, Joe, died from the debilitating disease that attacks the body's motor neurons, making it impossible to walk, speak, swallow and finally breathe. It is fatal within three to five years from the time of diagnosis. Devastated by the loss of her dad, Boucher used her father's hat and pipe plus snow from a nearby arena to create Snowman Joe in an effort to raise money for the ALS Society.
Boucher will also be setting up a table at the Plaza Pointe Claire shopping centre at the corner of St. Jean Blvd. and Donegani, on Nov. 24-26, accepting donations in exchange for Snowman Joe cookies, cards and notepads.source
