Jerry Wayne Steele shot the 14-year-old and her mother at the Shangri-La trailer park

CRESCENT CITY, Calif.—A 60-year-old man who shot a mother and daughter at a Crescent City trailer park before turning the gun on himself also had a "kidnapping kit" in the trunk of his car, authorities said Thursday.

Del Norte County Sheriff's Cmdr. Bill Steven said Jerry Wayne Steele shot the 14-year-old and her mother Tuesday at the Shangri-La trailer park.

Steven said Thursday the girl was declared brain dead and was on life support and not expected to survive, and the mother is being treated for head wounds at an Oregon hospital.

Steele later fatally shot himself after a Crescent City police officer caught up with him at a beach parking lot, Steven said. A number of bystanders and the officer witnessed the shooting, he said.

The mother and daughter had moved to Crescent City—about 350 miles north of their previous home in the Bay area—just six weeks ago to hide from Steele, Steven said. Detectives are still trying to figure out how Steele found the pair.

Santa Clara County prosecutor Steve Fein told the Daily Triplicate of Crescent City that Steele faced a maximum of 39 years in prison in the case. The paper reported that Steele had bailed out after his arrest in February.
