JONESBORO, Ga. -- Three people have been charged in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl, who died after being left in a daycare van for hours Monday afternoon.
Early Tuesday morning, Marlo Fallings, owner of Marlo's Magnificent Early Learning Center in Jonesboro, along with Fallings' daughter, Quantabia Hopkins and a juvenile, were each charged with second degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.
In a Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning licensing study dated March 1, 2011, evaluators noted: "591-1-1-.36(6)(d) requires that at the completion of every trip, a check must be made to assure that no child remains on the vehicle. The center staff did not initial or document the field trip form for children transported on October 26, 2010."
On Monday, the kids had gone on a daycare field trip to Chuck E. Cheese. When they returned to the daycare on Thrasher Court, all of the children were removed from the van -- except Jazmin.
It wasn't until nearly three hours after the van returned to the daycare that someone noticed Jazmin was missing, according to Lt. Tina Daniel of the Clayton County Police Department.
"My daughter trusted them folks like she trusted me," he said as he broke down in tears. "I don't know why they would leave my daughter out of all the people when they know her."
"They took my baby!" McAlister cried as she fell into Green's arms. "She was a beautiful girl. She was so smart and just lovable and playful."
Clayton County Police put a thermometer in one of their patrol cars outside the daycare center to get an idea how hot the van was. Lt. Daniels said after 15 minutes, the thermometer read 138 degrees.
"Zero seconds, zero seconds is the amount of time a child should be left alone in a car to prevent something like this from happening," Daniels said. Topics:
I had some neighbors (In the South West Gwinnett part of Norcoss that I call a ghetto. A lot of ex real hard core ghetto folks gravitate here . ) One of who worked in a day care for a long time , it was very close , within walking/ stone throwing distance . They both condoned a temporary year long whore house in the adjoining duplex she and her future husband lived next too , and also abandoned over 12 dogs and cats in the three years they lived in our complex . She is probably working in a day care some where else right now . Maybe some day cares need to get better quality people .
Just wondering...Are Day Care Centers required to post their latest inspection report in a prominent place (ie - front door of the facility so a prospective parent could turn around and walk away if the last inspection was less than 100%)...If not, they should be.. All restaurants are required to post their last State inspection in clear view of patrons. I wouldn't eat at a restaurant that had a failing score. Day Care facilities should be required by the State to show each prospective parent their last report and have an acknowledgement in their entrance forms that the parent read and understood the State inspection.
Why don't these mothers stay home and take care of their kids instead of farming them out to the daycare? If the kid had a father who worked the mom wouldn't have to work. If you can't afford to have kids, then don't have them. 70% of blacks are born out of wedlock. Maybe they should look at their own behavior. Get married or keep your legs together! The Mexicans at least take care of their children. I'm for sterilization of these folks, there are enough of them already.
I feel so sorry for the parents who have lost such a precious child. I can't seem to grasp how a daycare of all places doesn't have a plan to make sure this doesn't happen. I believe those responsible for this did not do this intentionally but someone should be held accountable. My prayers are with the family.
Completely unexcusable especially since the 8 month old was accidentally left sleeping in a crib in an air conditioned facility last week and was in perfect help when she was rescued. Every single day care facility should have had a "duh" moment and immediately reviewed their procedures. Someone needs to go to jail....Marlo's insurance company is going to be forking over a lot of money and the parents of a precious 2-1/2 year old baby will mourn the loss of their child for the rest of their lifes...
I agree with all the above commenters. Headcount is a MUST, and in the summer time should even be done by more than one person every time, just to be safe.
"Marlo's Magnificent Early Learning Academy" had better have a bevy of GOOD attorneys. Don't think there will be much left of "Marlo's Magnificent Early Learning Academy" after a jury finishes its work! Adults responsible should be tried for MANSLAUGHTER!
Where is the head count when putting children on and off the bus, then the walk through the bus????? Someone should go to jail for this.....
Why in the h*ll do these people not make a thorough search of the van immediately after unloading at the school? This is just inexcusable. Poor baby.
