It’s a decision we’ve all wrestled with at some point in our lives: Play a game against your bitter rival or pursue a Rhodes scholarship.
Check that. It’s something few people have ever faced.
But for Yale quarterback Patrick Witt, he chose one final chance to play in “The Game” against Harvard this Saturday rather than attend a Rhodes scholarship interview which is the same day.
Witt, who has had a standout career at Yale, has never beaten Harvard. Yale is 5-4 overall and 4-2 and in a three-way tie for second place in the Ivy League. Crimson is 6-0 in the conference.
So, “The Game” is a big one.
But would you pass up the opportunity to be a Rhodes Scholar to play in a game such as this? That is the question. As has been noted, Witt can apply to be a Rhodes Scholar against after he graduates, and among the criteria used to determine Rhodes Scholars is a “devotion to duty.”
By playing in the game, Witt, who transferred from Nebraska for academic reasons (insert your own Cornhusker joke here), is sort of helping his cause later on.
I think Witt made the right choice. Here’s guessing that Witt has a bright future ahead of him, even if he doesn’t eventually get a Rhodes scholarship. And he can always apply again.source
