Sonic Youth founding members Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have broken up after sharing a stage for 30 years and a bed for 27. It’s always a sad day when a long-term couple breaks up, but it hits especially hard when a talented, prolific couple calls it quits. A statement from Beggars Group, the company that owns the band’s label, Matador, confirmed the separation today.
If you have tickets for Sonic Youth’s upcoming tour, don’t fret. In the Beggar’s Group statement, the upcoming tour is still greenlit. According to Reuters the band’s tenure in South America will be short, starting in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 5. The fifth and final date will be played on November 14 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
If you don’t have tickets for the band’s upcoming tour, you might want to try to get on it, if you can afford it. Anyone who can’t afford a ticket will just have to content ourselves with listening to “Unmade Bed” on repeat. So far, Beggars Group has given fans no indication of whether or not Sonic Youth will manage to keep creating together, but anyone who’s ended a lengthy relationship before knows a positive outcome is unlikely. So far, the ex-couple seems to want to stay out of the news.
"Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."
Fans always talk about how Sonic Youth never sold themselves out. I’m just hoping Moore and Gordon didn’t sell their relationship short. That would be infinitely worse.
