sourceWhoever said this was going to be a boring and lackluster GOP campaign really blew it. Those who said Republican voters were so disenchanted with the current field of candidates evidently didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. To put it as delicately as I can, this field has surged, dropped, and changed so many times, it’s a little hard to keep up with who is where in the polls. First, we had Michelle Bachmann winning the Iowa straw poll, with Ron Paul coming in a close second. Much ado, etc., etc., etc. A couple of days after that, Texas Governor Rick Perry joined the race by making an announcement in South Carolina. This followed much speculation about his intentions and resulted in an immediate front runner status for the man from Texas. That resulted in his being attacked from all points and beyond, both during the debates and elsewhere. He had is clock cleaned in the Florida debate and suddenly, he didn’t look so promising. This, despite the fact that a good or bad debate performance does not make or brake a presidential candidate. Shortly thereafter, businessman Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll and now, even better news for the man who used to run Godfather’s Pizza. Ladies and gentlemen, we now have a new entry into the top tier of GOP presidential candidates. According to a Fox News poll, taken from September 25 to September 27, Herman Cain has surged into the coveted top tier of candidates.
Three September debates have shaken-up the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Herman Cain has jumped into the top tier. Rick Perry’s stumbled. Mitt Romney’s holding steady.
And Michele Bachmann is hitting bottom. That’s according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.
The new poll found Cain’s support has nearly tripled among GOP primary voters to 17 percent.
That’s up from 6 percent before this month’s debates, and puts him in what is essentially a three-way tie with Perry and Romney.
Cain has benefited not only from his debate performances, but also significant media attention after winning the Florida Republican Party’s straw poll on Saturday.
Perry now garners 19 percent, a drop of 10 percentage points from a month ago. That puts Romney back in the top spot with the support of 23 percent. Last month Romney was at 22 percent.
I really don’t know a lot about Herman Cain. I did learn that he figured prominently in the debate over the ill-fated attempt by Bill and Hillary Clinton to reform health care. That fact, in and of itself, makes me respect the man. It is not an endorsement, but it does lead me to believe that Cain is worth a closer look. In light of that, I want to share a video I found of a semi-quasi debate on the subject of health care reform between Herman Cain and Bill Clinton. Maybe it will shed some light on the new entry to the top tier of GOP presidential candidates. See what you think.
