HONOLULU (AP) - Under new terms of a contract offer the state has implemented, Hawaii teachers face suspensions of five to 30 days for testing positive for drugs or alcohol.
The state has abandoned an effort to subject teachers to random drug testing, but new terms spell out for the first time the penalties for testing positive for alcohol or drugs.
A positive test for a first offense carries a five-day suspension for alcohol and 15 days for drugs. A second positive test can lead to 15 days' suspension for alcohol and 30 for drugs. A third positive test requires voluntary resignation.
The Department of Education has had a "reasonable suspicion" policy since 2007, but procedures for failed tests have never been outlined in the teacher contract. Click Here!
