Mac Mini Server

Desire Athow view bio follow I have been musing and writing about technology since 1999 back in my native country Mauritius, dreaming back in 1997 of a world full of avatars...

It shares a few features with the cheapest Mac Mini like the Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with the system RAM, a Thunderbolt, HDMI, Firewire, SDXC, GbE, quad USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.

There are some notable differences though which explains the £320 price difference; Apple chose to throw in a second generation Sandy Bridge Quad Core Intel Core i7 CPU clocked at 2GHz with 6MB L2 cache onchip.

Like the more expensive version of the Mac Mini, it has 4GB main memory but comes with a pair of 500GB 7200RPM hard disk drives (faster than the usual 5400RPM) but surprisingly while the weight increases, the height remains the same.

The other major difference is the inclusion of OSX Lion and its server version as well; the latter includes unlimited-client licence, server app, profile manager, file sharing for the iPad, push notification, Wiki, iCal and Mail servers plus Xsan.

The new Mac Mini server is possibly more powerful than the entry level models from the now defunct Xserve server range at a fraction of the price.
