China Bullet Train Derails

A bullet train has derailed in China killing 43 people after two of its carriages fell from a bridge.

State media said 200 people remain in hospital with their injuries, 12 are in a critical condition.

The train was travelling from the regional capital Hangzhou to Wenzhou when it derailed.

China national radio quoted an unnamed official who blamed the accident on a lightning strike which it is claimed caused a power cut.

State media said the train was then struck from behind by the following service.

Following the crash, the government has sacked head of the Shanghai railway bureau his deputy and the bureau's Communist Party chief, the Railways Ministry said in a statement on its website.

The accident comes less than a month after the country opened a new high speed rail link between Beijing and Shanghai.

The new line, which cost more than £20bn to build has been plagued with problems including delays and power outages.
