Subaru Forester 2011 had a new engine and increased mileage ratings

You’ve heard it before: Your mileage will vary. With that out of the way, we knocked out an average of 28.2 mpg (according to the trip computer) during a 145-mile highway-only mileage loop in the 2011 Forester that had a new engine and increased mileage ratings. The results stack up well, especially considering the Forester is rated at 27 mpg on the highway with base engine and optional four-speed automatic transmission we drove. Official ratings are 21/27 mpg city/highway and 23 mpg combined.

In our testing, the EPA’s ratings have – for the most part – been more accurate after it adjusted its evaluation methodology for 2008. The EPA also has user-submitted mileage numbers at Fueleconomy.gov. For 2009, automatic-equipped Foresters with the base engine averaged 22.6 mpg as reported by 13 owners, and for 2010, 10 users averaged 23.6 mpg. The combined mileage rating for 2009 and 2010 models is 22 mpg.

An available turbocharged engine comes in XT models and boosts power, but takes a hit in gas mileage with ratings of 19/24 mpg and 21 mpg combined.
