The Denver Broncos running back was allegedly driving 70 mph in a 45 mph interstate construction zone, Denver police Lt. Matthew Murray said.
According to Denver district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough, Moreno also is being charged with failure to have proof of insurance. He was issued a police summons and is due back in court March 2.
The Broncos have issued a written statement: “We take the incident involving Knowshon Moreno very seriously and are thoroughly reviewing this matter. Our organization will continue to gather information and closely monitor this issue while the legal process runs its course.”
Moreno was drafted 12th overall by the Broncos in 2009 and enjoyed his best season as a rookie, rushing for 947 yards and seven touchdowns.
His role on the team diminished this season -- 179 yards and no touchdowns before his season ended with a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Nov. 15 -- as running back Willis McGahee (1,199 yards, four touchdowns) and quarterback Tim Tebow (660 yards, six touchdowns) took over the running game.
