A West Seattle man is facing felony charges following allegations that an attempted beer theft took a salivary turn.
In charging documents, King County prosecutors contend Cullen P. O’Doughty, 24, was drunk and looking for more beer when he attempted to shoplift a 24 pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer from a Kent Safeway store on June 17.
“In this case, while being arrested for theft of alcohol, the defendant purposely spit in the face of a Kent Police officer, causing spit to land in his eyes and mouth,” Deputy Prosecutor Gretchen J. Holmgren. “This assault caused a significant health risk to the officer who is now undergoing a significant amount of health screenings to determine if he was exposed to any illnesses.”
According to charging documents, security at the Southeast Kent Kangley Road store was told that O’Doughty was carrying a case of beer around the store, apparently looking for a way out. He allegedly carried the case out the front door when security contacted him.
O’Doughty tried to flee the scene after the security guard took grabbed him, a Kent police detective told the court. The guard subdued O’Doughty after a brief struggle, placed him in handcuffs and secured the beer.
Kent officers arrived at the scene shortly after the 6 p.m. incident and placed the drunk man under arrest for theft.
O’Doughty became irate as officers tried to read him a notification of rights, the detective told the court. When his mobile phone rang, O’Doughty triedto answer it and was pushed back into a chair by an officer.
As officers walked O’Doughty to a waiting patrol car, the man allegedly cursed at police and spit in the face of an officer. According to charging documents, O’Doughty spit into the officer’s eyes and mouth, then attempted to spit again before a spit hood was placed over his head.
O’Doughty has since been charged with third-degree assault – assault against a police officer – and third-degree theft. He remains jailed on $25,000 bail.source
