Unique U.S. Map

No, it's not some exotic mathematical equation. It has to do with the discretion of a local artist numerically labeling his masterpieces.

Case in point: The colorful map of America painted on the surface of the school yard at St. John's Elementary School in West Frankfort. When Gene Alexander originally painted it five years ago, it was designated No. 30. After the recent repaint job to brighten it up, he renumbered it. Author's privilege, more or less.

None of the bright hues that leap off his brush are more colorful than the artist himself. You can call him "Gene." You can call him "Mr. Alexander." You can call him "sir." But if you are like myriad fans of his, you will affectionately refer to him as "Mr. A."

Alexander, 76, a lifetime bachelor, dedicated his life to education, having spent most of his career in the classrooms and as a principal in Benton. He retired 21 years ago, in 1990, after 32 years in education.

Alexander graduated from BHS in 1953 and entered the military. When he left the service he attended SIU, where he eventually received a master's degree.
