Ralph Fiennes will appear on the stage of the Theatre Royal Haymarket in August, playing Prospero in Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest. The production, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, will run from 27 August to 29 October.Fiennes’ award-winning movie career includes The Constant Gardener, Sunshine and Schindler’s List, as well as The English Patient, The Duchess, End of the Affair, Quiz Show and The Reader. He plays the evil Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series of films and was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his performance in HBO’s Bernard and Doris written by Hugh Costello.
In 2010, Fiennes directed and starred in a feature film of Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus which he also produced. The film was invited to premiere in competition at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival and will open at the end of 2011.
Trevor Nunn was the longest-serving Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Royal Shakespeare Company (1968–86). As well as the Shakespeare plays, Nunn directed Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables.
The Theatre Royal Haymarket dates back to 1720. The present theatre, now a Grade 1 listed building, was built by John Nash in 1821 a short distance from the theatre’s original site. There are 90-minute tours of the theatre at 11am on the first Wednesday of every month, cost £8.
Tickets for The Tempest will cost £10–£59 plus concessions. A £1 restoration levy will be added to all ticket prices. A number of top-price tickets will go on sale at £14 at 10am on the day of each performance. They can be bought in person from the theatre’s box office.
