Microsoft has announced that it is likely to be shipping out Mango powered handsets very soon – possibly as early as next week. However the devices will not be available for sale. Rather, the phones are what are called developer phones. This means that experts will be able to get their hands on the prototype handset running the latest Windows Phone 7 update.
Speaking with knowyourmobile.com one expert said: “It’s not yet known which devices Microsoft will supply and whether they plan to charge developers for said devices.” He added: “[Microsoft is] still in the process of putting the final touches to each of our programs which will enable developers to get devices, so the only thing I can ask is to be patient.”
Microsoft is banking on the new update to its Windows Phone 7 operating system for a number of reasons. Firstly it is believed to be offering specifications not found on other platforms, notably Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Secondly, the deal with Nokia could be a make or break situation for both companies. Nokia needs the relationship with Microsoft to succeed in order to stem the tide of its possible demise. As far as Microsoft is concerned, the software giant needs to get a greater foothold into smartphone market. To date sales of WP7 handsets have been disappointing.
A Spokesperson for Microsoft said: “[We are] working to make sure that the devices aren’t limited to just the big software developers.”
