Canada Post Strike Update

In the ongoing postal strike, negotiations continue but the Conservative government’s latest offer is a disappointment to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers who are calling the legislation “very restrictive.”

The proposal set forth by the government in the back-to-work legislation offers less to postal workers than what was proposed in the last wage settlement offered by Canada Post.

The legislation was introduced on Tuesday by Labour Minister Lisa Raitt and offers postal workers a wage increase the first year of 1.75 percent followed the second year with a 1.5 percent increase and the following two years would see an additional 2 percent per year increase.

After the announcement by Raitt, NDP Leader Jack Layton voiced concerns over imposing wages, but the proposal was met with agreement from Prime Minister Stephen Harper who commented that the settlement is fair for Canada Post workers.

Peter Van Loan, Government House Leader, stated that he believes the legislation will pass by the end of the week, although the NDP is vowing they will delay it. Either way, mail service will remain disrupted until at least next week.
