World Environment Day

Since 1973, World Environment Day has been held annually on the 5th June. The day encourages world-wide recognition of environmental issues and encourages political action. This year BHD Star Cinema, Ho Chi Minh City has organized a special series of film screenings in order to raise funds to support Japanese disaster victims.

Films being screened include American sci-fi disaster epic ‘2012’, Korean monster-horror ‘The Host’ and ‘Haeundae’ (Deadly Tsunami). Also featured is ‘Aftershocks’, a film based on the Tangshan earthquake which won the Best Picture at the 2010 Asian Movie Awards.

What better way to highlight the fragility of our environment than through these stunning films? These enthralling works of fiction can bring the experience of a natural (or in the case of ‘The Host’, monster) disaster to life in a way real news coverage can struggle to. The effect the fiction has in the cinema can be carried to the reality outside – just buying a ticket contributes to a good cause.
